Travis Credit Union is a not-for-profit cooperative financial institution serving those who live, work, worship or attend school in Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, Merced, Napa, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus and Yolo counties. Travis Credit Union is currently the 14th largest credit union in California with more than 214,000 members and more than $4.2 billion in assets.
The credit union, which has its headquarters in Vacaville, is celebrating 70 years of service this year.
Since its inception in 1951, Travis Credit Union has focused not only on serving its membership well, but on making a positive, substantive impact on community well-being. The mission at Travis Credit Union is one of dual purpose: to help members build and augment their financial success while enriching and elevating the financial prosperity of those living in the communities the credit union serves.
The driving force beneath the credit union’s culture is its Awesome Cause – changing lives and lifting communities through financial wellness. Travis Credit Union believes in helping its members and community build toward financial peace of mind by planning for the future, saving for the unexpected, spending within one’s means and borrowing responsibly.
“The challenges we all experienced in 2020 only reinforced our resolve to continue working toward TCU’s vision – the belief that every interaction with us creates value for our members and communities; helping them become more financially resilient,” says Barry Nelson, president and CEO of Travis Credit Union. “Amid the pandemic, TCU rapidly implemented Covid-19 relief programs to better serve members, working closely with those in financial distress by waiving fees, modifying loans and much more. We quickly transitioned to a completely virtual environment, reimagined events and expanded our webinar offerings to provide financial education that reflected current needs brought on by the pandemic.”
Travis Credit Union in April implemented a $1 million philanthropic initiative to reach 96 local organizations across five counties. These funds went to organizations providing both immediate public health and long-term economic challenges caused by the pandemic. In addition, the Travis Credit Union Foundation also raised and distributed more than $2 million of Covid-19 relief funds to 83 nonprofit organizations in six counties: Solano, Napa, Yolo, Contra Costa, Merced and Sonoma. The foundation also played an integral role in helping to raise and distribute $128,000 for families and individuals impacted by the LNU Lightning Complex Fire.
“The commitment exemplified by TCU staff to support and engage with members and the community during these difficult times has made a difference, and we feel that our efforts have been appreciated by those whom we serve,” Nelson says. “TCU has earned this recognition for the past 24 out of 25 years. After a quarter of a century, we are honored for the ability to continue meeting the expectations of our community and for the opportunity to build on our reputation for being ‘Best in Class.’ ”
Travis Credit Union is also certified as a Community Development Financial Institution and Juntas Avanzamos financial institution. Travis Credit Union has consistently been recognized as one of the healthiest credit unions in the United States by deposit/accounts and one of the top 20 financial institutions nationwide by NerdWallet to recognize the important link between education and local economic development.
“We take pride in changing lives and lifting communities through financial wellness,” Nelson says.
