A study of 1,000 patients discharged from hospital between March and November last year found that each participant had an average of nine persistent symptoms.
The most common included muscle pain, fatigue, physical slowing down, poor sleep, joint pain, limb weakness and short-term memory loss.
The study, led by the universities of Leicester and Loughborough but not yet published in a peer-reviewed journal, assessed 1,007 patients.
It found that more than 25 per cent had symptoms of anxiety and depression and 12 per cent had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Leicester and Loughborough study grouped people into four different clusters, based on the severity of participants’ mental and physical health conditions.
