On Tuesday, Newport News police spokeswoman Kelly King said the department does not have a contract with Clearview and has never paid to use its facial recognition program.

Administrators reached out to the department’s homicide unit both times the newspapers inquired about Clearview, she said.

The lieutenant leading that unit reported back, saying they didn’t know of any investigators who had.

But King didn’t rule out the possibility of investigators trying out the facial recognition program without top brass or their commanding officer giving the OK or even knowing about it
