The UK’s rapid vaccine rollout could mean that British holidaymakers are first in line for Greek holidays this summer.

Greek officials have signalled that they will open their ‘arms and doors’ to British travellers ahead of other countries.

The Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis told The Times: “As far as the UK is concerned we are happy we can open our arms and doors earlier than scheduled. This is the plan we are trying to pursue for some countries that have high vaccination rates.”

The country is slated to officially reopen on May 14, but ministers have indicated that pilot schemes could be implemented before this date to test border protocols. However it is unlikely that the UK Government will give the go ahead to foreign travel before May 17.

“We are happy to open up earlier and potentially fix any issues that may arise with countries that are deemed safer than others. Israel and the UK are at the top,” Theoharis said.

The news could quell fears that have been raised over upcoming vaccine shortages in the UK potentially affecting holiday chances this summer.
