Clearwater, Fla. – Today, March 18, Clearwater Gas System will observe the nationwide Gas Utility Workers’ Day. This is the fifth year in which Gas Utility Workers’ Day has been officially celebrated across the country. This day is a time when communities give recognition to the employees who support and maintain safe operations of gas utility systems.



March 18 was selected because that is the date, back in 1937, of a school explosion located in New London, Texas, due to a gas leak inside the facility. The aftermath of this event led to widespread legislation that required odorization of natural gas so it could be easily detectable in the event of a leak.

Safety is a vital aspect to natural gas distribution, and the employees of distribution companies endeavor to make natural gas delivery as safe as possible. This annual nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees of gas utilities.

“Many of our customers recognize the need to access reliable, affordable, safe energy and depend on our natural and propane gas utility team for that need,” said Chuck Warrington, Clearwater Gas System executive director. Clearwater Gas System’s team of 93 full-time employees operate and maintain more than 1,000 miles of underground natural gas mains throughout Pinellas and Pasco Counties, in addition to providing propane gas service and maintaining a compressed natural gas fueling station.

Clearwater Gas System joins the American Public Gas Association (APGA) and other natural gas utility companies across the nation in honoring gas workers for all their hard work.
