CHIHUAHUA. Eleven candidates for popularly elected positions have been assassinated since last November prior to the start of the campaigns, according to the count by the Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM); the last two were victimized less than 24 hours after the federal government announced the strategy to protect them.

The victims were recognized by their party leadership or had openly expressed their intention to run for popularly elected office.

Most of the murders have been of aspiring mayors, numbering nine plus one who is kidnapped. There is also a victim who was seeking to be a local deputy and another who was on the list of aspiring councilors.

In the breakdown by party, Morena has four assassinated candidates, the PAN has three, two from the PRI and one more from the PRD.

So far, most of the fatal attacks have occurred in Veracruz, which totals six. On November 21, three attacks were registered in the entity against Mario Figueroa Mundo, candidate for mayor of Taxco for Morena; Roberto Zapoteco Castro, who sought to govern Zitlala for the PRI, and Efrén Valois Morales, a morenista who wanted to compete for Pilcaya. The latter died.
