CHIHUAHUA. Eleven candidates for popularly elected positions have been assassinated since last November prior to the start of the campaigns, according to the count by the Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM); the last two were victimized less than 24 hours after the federal government announced the strategy to protect them.

The victims were recognized by their party leadership or had openly expressed their intention to run for popularly elected office.

Most of the murders have been of aspiring mayors, numbering nine plus one who is kidnapped. There is also a victim who was seeking to be a local deputy and another who was on the list of aspiring councilors.

In the breakdown by party, Morena has four assassinated candidates, the PAN has three, two from the PRI and one more from the PRD.

So far, most of the fatal attacks have occurred in Veracruz, which totals six. Domingo Panzo Tecpile, who was seeking a local deputation for the PAN in Zongolica, was assassinated on December 13, 2020. On January 6, Luis Juan Noriega, candidate for mayor of Uxpanapa for Morena, suffered the same fate.

Carlos Fernández Rocha, who was on the list of councilors for the PAN for the municipality of San Andrés Tuxtla, was shot on February 8, 2021. Three days later, on February 11, they assassinated the candidate for mayor of Úrsulo Galván, Gilberto Ortiz Parra, from Morena.

That same week, on the 15th, armed individuals murdered Carla Enríquez Merlin, also a morenista, who would compete for the municipal presidency of Cosoleacaque, and just on Thursday afternoon, Melquiades Vázquez Lucas, PRI candidate for mayor of La Perla, was shot. .

The second most violent state for the candidates is Guerrero, where four candidates suffered attacks that killed two.

Antonio Hernández Godínez, candidate for mayor of Chilapa by the PRD, was assassinated on November 25, 2020.

On November 21, three attacks were registered in the entity against Mario Figueroa Mundo, candidate for mayor of Taxco for Morena; Roberto Zapoteco Castro, who sought to govern Zitlala for the PRI, and Efrén Valois Morales, a morenista who wanted to compete for Pilcaya. The latter died.

In Guanajuato, José Antonio Acosta Cano, aspiring mayor of Juventino Rosas was assassinated by the PAN on January 12, 2021.
